Red light therapy has become a staple in my wellness routine, so I was excited to test BlockBlueLight’s new PowerPanel series – four different red light therapy panels (MID, PRO, MAX, and MEGA). These devices promise clinical-grade red and near-infrared light therapy for home use, with the convenience of modern features.

After several weeks of daily use, I’m ready to share my personal experience with each model.

Spoiler: incorporating these panels not only boosted my post-workout recovery and sleep quality, but also felt like having a personal spa at home.

And if you’re already using other recovery tools (like ice baths or an infrared sauna for deep heat therapy), you’ll find that adding targeted red light sessions with a PowerPanel is a perfect complementary hack for muscle recovery and overall wellness.

BlockBlueLight's Red Light Therapy Power Panels Overview

Before diving into each model, it’s worth noting that all four panels share some great qualities. They use five therapeutic wavelengths of light – two in the red range (630nm and 660nm) and three in near-infrared (810nm, 830nm, 850nm) – covering both skin-deep benefits and deeper tissue penetration.

The technology is Generation 5 from BlockBlueLight, meaning each panel has an interactive touchscreen, independent wavelength control (you can adjust the intensity of each wavelength or turn red/NIR on or off individually), customizable pulsing (1–10,000 Hz if you want to experiment with pulsed light), and the ability to save presets for your favorite settings.

All panels are also flicker-free and ultra low-EMF, which gave me peace of mind – I measured virtually zero electromagnetic field at the typical treatment distance. Build quality felt solid across the lineup, with metal casings and cooling fans that run quietly (around 43 dB, which is a gentle hum).

Each unit came with everything needed to get started: a power cord, a remote control, an over-the-door hanging kit (hook, pulley and cables), plus safety goggles and a detailed manual. Essentially, BlockBlueLight provides a complete package so you can start treatment right out of the box without hunting for extra accessories.

What's included in your purchase

If you ever buy the PRO model onwards, expect these inclusions:

  1. A pair of protective goggles
  2. Door-mount hook with pulley cables
  3. Power cord
  4. Remote control

The Setup Experience

Setting up the panels was straightforward. Using the included door hook, I was able to hang each panel on a sturdy door in my home gym and adjust the height with the pulley system so that the light targeted the desired area of my body. Alternatively, you can prop the panel against a wall or on a shelf; the larger ones even have a built-in handle on top for carrying and positioning.

The touchscreen control is very intuitive – I could set the timer, choose continuous or pulsed mode, and even dim the brightness if needed. I also appreciated the remote control when I was doing sessions lying down; it let me start or pause a session without getting up (a small luxury, but handy when you’re super relaxed during a session!). Now, let’s talk about each model and how they performed in practice.

The PowerPanel MID is the smallest of the bunch, but don’t let its size fool you. This panel houses 120 dual-chip LEDs and is about 54 cm x 21 cm (roughly 21″ x 8″) in dimensions. I’d describe it as a tall, slim panel – easy to carry around at about 4.6 kg weight, yet it outputs an impressive amount of light. Standing 6 inches from the MID, my light meter read peak irradiance around 158 mW/cm², which is on par with some full-sized panels on the market. In use, the MID felt perfect for targeted treatments

I often set it up on my desk or coffee table to shine on my face and neck for skin health and collagen boost. Within about two weeks of daily 10-minute face sessions, I noticed my skin looking a bit more vibrant (friends even commented that I had a “post-vacation glow,” though I hadn’t been anywhere!). The high red light output (630nm/660nm) is great for skin, and I certainly felt like my complexion was benefiting.

Despite being the “baby” of the lineup, the MID can actually cover a decent area – for example, I could treat my entire upper body (chest and shoulders) by positioning it a couple of feet away, or I could move it closer for an intense dose on a specific spot (like a sore knee). I found it lightweight enough to travel with on a weekend trip; it fit in the car trunk easily. In a hotel, I just propped it on a chair to do my evening red light session – as long as you have a standard power outlet, you’re good to go.

The portability means you can use it in different rooms or even bring it to the office if you want a midday recharge. And because it’s flicker-free and low-EMF, using it in close quarters felt comfortable (no weird buzzing or headaches – you’d hardly know it’s on except for the red glow and gentle warmth). One thing to note is that the MID’s treatment area is more focused compared to the bigger panels – it’s ideal for one person targeting one region at a time.

If you want to do full-body sessions regularly, you might consider sizing up. But for beginners or those on a budget, the PowerPanel MID offers a fantastic entry into effective home red light therapy without skimping on the advanced Gen-5 features.

Next up is the PowerPanel PRO, which turned out to be my personal favorite of the range. This model has 150 LEDs and measures about 48 cm x 30 cm. It’s a bit wider than the MID, giving better horizontal coverage, and weighs ~5.6 kg – still very manageable to move around. I nicknamed the PRO the “sweet spot” panel because it balances size and power in a way that suited most of my needs. When I first added the PowerPanel PRO to my morning routine, I immediately loved how it could bathe my whole torso in light in one go. For morning sessions, I’d stand in front of it for about 10 minutes while doing some stretches. Over a few weeks, I observed some noticeable benefits: my skin looked brighter and more even (the improved circulation and collagen from the red light really shows on the face), and I experienced less stiffness in my joints upon waking up. As someone who often has a creaky lower back and knees in the morning, this was a big deal. I also went through the winter without catching my usual seasonal cold, which I suspect might be thanks to the immune-supportive effect of near-infrared light on the body – a welcome bonus! (For those curious about the science, red/infrared light can reduce inflammation and support the immune system; we’ve covered some of these red light therapy benefits in a separate article.)

In terms of usage, the PRO is powerful – up to 160 mW/cm² at 6 inches according to specs. In my own measurements, I found it comparable to the MID’s intensity (within the margin of error), which is to say very strong. That allowed me to either do shorter sessions or stand a bit further back to cover more of my body and still get a therapeutic dose of light. The PRO’s extra width came in handy; I could target my entire back or abdomen area more evenly than with the slimmer MID. For example, after a weightlifting day, I used the PRO to shine on my quads and hamstrings simultaneously by sitting in front of it, and I felt that it helped reduce muscle soreness by the next day (the post-exercise recovery boost from red/NIR light is something I definitely notice, anecdotally).

The touchscreen controls on the PRO made it easy to tinker with settings. I experimented with the independent wavelength control – one evening, out of curiosity, I turned near-infrared down to 0% and used only the red light at low brightness as a kind of “pre-sleep” session. The room was dark besides a dim red glow, and it was quite relaxing; I slept very deeply those nights. Other times, especially if I had a headache or just wanted an energizing session, I’d crank all wavelengths to 100% for a short 5-minute blast. Having that level of customization is great for biohackers who like to adjust protocols.

The PRO, like all the panels, also has a pulsing mode – I’ll admit I mostly stuck to continuous light (old habits die hard), but I did try a 10 Hz pulsing session as some research suggests pulsed light might enhance certain benefits. I can’t say I felt a huge difference versus continuous mode, but it’s cool that it’s there for those who want it. The bottom line: the PowerPanel PRO is a versatile workhorse. It’s large enough to treat big areas efficiently, but small enough to be portable around the house. If you can only get one panel and want a balance of coverage and convenience, the PRO would be my top pick.

Editor’s Rating: 4.3/5.0

Now we get into the big league with the PowerPanel MAX. This unit doubles the LED count from the Pro, with 240 LEDs on board, and it’s correspondingly larger and heavier – about 8.8 kg in weight. The panel’s form factor is more extended; in fact, the MAX nearly doubled the coverage area of the MID. I found that when hanging the MAX on a door, it stretched from about my head down to mid-thigh (I’m average height), so it really starts to deliver near full-body coverage in one session. Intensity-wise, it’s rated up to ~162 mW/cm² at 6 inches, which again is among the highest in class. Using the MAX felt akin to having a professional therapy panel like you’d find in a clinic – the kind where you stand in front of a large array and feel fully bathed in red and infrared light.

With the MAX, I established a routine of doing 15-minute sessions every other day, focusing on overall recovery. I’d stand about 8–10 inches away to get my whole front side irradiated, and then I’d turn around to do my backside for another 15 minutes. Yes, it’s a longer session, but the relaxation aspect makes it enjoyable – I often played some calm music or did breathing exercises while at it. The payoff was noticeable: I felt significantly less muscle soreness after tough workouts when I used the MAX. For example, I did a heavy leg day and then used the MAX on my legs and lower back; normally I’d be hobbling for two days, but with the red light therapy, the DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) was much milder. I also noticed improved flexibility during warm-ups on days after using the panel, likely due to reduced stiffness. For anyone into sports recovery or managing aches and pains, the MAX truly shines (pun intended).

That said, with great power (and size) comes a bit less convenience: the MAX is a bit of a unit to move around. I could still manage to lug it between rooms thanks to the sturdy built-in handle, but it’s not something you’d casually tote on a trip. I ended up installing the door hook in a dedicated spot because I didn’t want to constantly mount/dismount such a heavy panel. Despite the weight, it’s still “portable” in the sense that you don’t need any special electrical setup – it plugs into a regular wall outlet and draws about 480W at full power.

As long as you have a door or a rolling stand (BlockBlueLight sells stands for these panels too), you can position the MAX where you need it. During operation, I was pleased to note that even with all those LEDs, the cooling fans kept it from overheating and the noise remained a low hum, not disruptive at all. The build feels very robust – clearly designed to handle the output. In fact, the MAX is a model I’d consider suitable for a small clinic or physiotherapy practice, not just home use, given its performance.

If you’re someone who wants to cover larger areas or even do couples’ sessions (my partner and I stood side by side in front of it to do a joint session – it was actually quite fun and plenty broad for two people), the PowerPanel MAX is a compelling choice. It’s an investment, but you’re getting a near-professional grade device that can truly elevate a home therapy setup.

Lastly, the PowerPanel MEGA – BlockBlueLight’s flagship panel and the biggest of the lot. This beast contains 300 LEDs and measures about 92 cm x 30 cm (approximately 3 feet tall). Weighing in at roughly 9.8 kg, the MEGA is a substantial piece of equipment, yet it’s surprisingly user-friendly for its size. It has the same sleek all-in-one design with a carry handle and even touchscreen controls on the panel itself (no external control boxes or cables aside from the power cord). When I first powered on the MEGA, I felt like I had a mini red light therapy clinic in my house. The coverage is fantastic – I could stand in front of it and literally get head-to-toe red/NIR light if I stood about a foot or two back. Up close at 6 inches, the MEGA delivers a whopping 167 mW/cm² intensity, which is one of the highest outputs you’ll find on any consumer panel. To put that in perspective, a 10-minute session with the MEGA can deliver a therapeutic dose that might take 15-20 minutes on smaller or less powerful devices. It’s efficient and intense (in a good way).

In my experience, the MEGA truly excelled at full-body rejuvenation. I used it 3-4 times a week, usually in the evenings as a wind-down. After a long day, there’s something almost meditative about standing (or sitting) in front of this big panel bathed in warm red light. It’s like a whole-body charger – I often finished a session feeling both relaxed and re-energized. Over the trial period, I noticed improvements that I would attribute to these full-body sessions: my sleep quality improved noticeably (tracked by my wearable – deeper sleep and fewer awakenings at night on the days I did a session before bed), and I felt an uptick in overall mood and energy levels. There were even cosmetic perks – a couple of small scars and blemishes on my body seemed to fade faster, which is consistent with red light’s known benefits for skin healing. One unexpected benefit: using the MEGA on cold winter mornings. On a chilly day, I’d stand close to it and let the near-infrared gently warm up my body – it’s not a space heater by any means, but the radiant warmth feels great and seems to loosen up my muscles and joints before stretching or exercise.

Now, let’s address the obvious: the MEGA is big and heavy. Does that make it hard to handle? Honestly, not really, in my case. Yes, at ~10 kg you notice the heft, but the design includes that top handle which gives you a solid grip. As long as you’re careful, you can carry it from, say, your living room to your bedroom without much hassle – I did this often, since I liked doing morning sessions in my gym space but evening sessions in the bedroom. It’s roughly the size of a large yoga mat (rolled up) in terms of height, so it can tuck away in a corner when not in use. And like all the panels, you only need a normal outlet to plug it in; no special electrical work needed despite its high power draw. I even brought the MEGA over to a friend’s house once for a “recovery night” gathering – we jokingly called it the red light party. Transporting it was a bit of a workout, but it was doable (I wouldn’t try to fly with it, though!). Once it was set up, everyone could take turns standing in front of the MEGA and they were all pretty amazed at how powerful it felt. One friend remarked it was like standing in a sunset, and that’s actually a good description – it’s bathing you in those deep red hues that you might find in nature’s evening light, just much more concentrated.

Because the MEGA is the premium model, it comes with the premium price tag. However, BlockBlueLight does back it with a risk-free trial and a solid warranty, which eased my mind when using it. (All the PowerPanels have a 30-day trial period and a 5-year warranty, which is one of the best warranties I’ve seen in this space.) This tells me the company stands behind their build quality. After using the MEGA extensively, I can see why – it’s built like a tank and I encountered zero issues like LED failures or overheating. If anything, the only “downside” is that now I’m spoiled by the full-body experience, it’s hard to go back to smaller devices!

What I Think of BlueBlockLight's Red Light Therapy Panels

Having tried the entire BlockBlueLight PowerPanel lineup, I’m genuinely impressed. Each model delivered on the core promise of effective red and near-infrared light therapy, and the advanced Gen-5 features made them a joy to use (no fumbling with outdated controls or worrying about safety issues). My actual results – from better skin and sleep to faster muscle recovery – reinforce that these panels are not gimmicks but serious wellness tools. Now, choosing between MID, PRO, MAX, or MEGA will depend on your needs and budget:

  • MID: Great for targeted use, portability, or if you’re just getting started. Despite being compact, it’s powerful and versatile. Ideal for focused treatments (face, joints, etc.) and easy to move around.

  • PRO: A balanced mid-size panel – in my opinion, the best all-around choice for most users. It can cover a larger area than the MID, has the same high irradiance, and is still easy to handle. Perfect if you want one panel for daily use on different body parts without too much heft.

  • MAX: For those who want high-end performance and broader coverage. This is edging into full-body treatment territory and is excellent for serious fitness recovery or therapeutic use. It’s heavier, yes, but it pays off by saving time (fewer repositionings) and delivering ample light to large muscle groups.

  • MEGA: The no-compromise option – essentially a professional-grade panel at home. Choose this if you’re a dedicated biohacker, athlete, or someone with significant wellness needs that justify a full-body device. It’s the most expensive and bulky, but also the most immersive experience. After using the MEGA, I can confidently say it’s one of the most powerful panels on the market, and it truly brings the spa/clinic experience to your home.

In summary, BlockBlueLight’s PowerPanel series has something for everyone, and all models share the quality and features that make treatments easy and effective. I also love the fact that you can connect panels (they’re designed with a modular approach), so if you start with one and later expand your setup, they’ll work in sync. As someone passionate about recovery and wellness tech, these devices get a big thumbs up from me. They’ve earned a permanent spot in my routine.

If you’re looking to invest in red light therapy for your home, the BlockBlueLight panels are a fantastic choice that can genuinely enhance your health regimen. Given how I’ve been feeling after using them, I’d say this is one of the best additions I’ve made to my recovery toolkit – right up there with my massage gun and infrared sauna sessions

And on that note, if you’re curious how red light panels pair with saunas or other therapies, I’d encourage you to explore our other resources and reviews.
